TREATMENT FORMATS

As a systemic family therapist I am licensed for the individual, group, partner and family therapy. Any form of work begins with the first interview.

The first interview

The purpose of the first interview is to introduce each other, present the problems client(s) have, and to discuss expectations from the therapy and treatment possibilities. It's an opportunity for you to ask questions related to psychotherapy and my work, and for the conversation about goals, adequate formats and pace of the work.

Individual psychotherapy

Individual work provides the best conditions for achieving desired personal changes and creating “tailor made” approach. It refers to an individual work with an adult, adolescent or a child. The characteristic of the systemic approach is the flexibility and the possibility that the important others occasionally engage in the therapeutic process. That is, of course, of particular importance in working with children and adolescents, but it is possible, as well, that adult client, if he wants and believes that it is important, sometimes invites "guests" to therapy sessions. The “guest” can be a partner or family member whose understanding, cooperation and support are important for the realization of the desired goals. The usual pace of work is once a week for a period of 50 min, but different arrangements are possible depending on the needs and possibilities of the client.

Couple therapy

Couple therapy focuses on improving the relationship between two people in a marriage or partnership. Initial phase is dedicated to gathering information, clarifying each partner’s expectations for their relationship and the therapeutic process, as well as understanding how the partners experience each other’s differences, problems and strengths. Depending on cooperatively defined problems and desired changes, the further course of treatment is aimed at defining the concrete "steps" in the wanted direction and improving the skills needed for a more harmonious relationship - which may include: active listening, collaborative decision-making, giving and receiving constructive criticism, techniques for de-escalating conflict and the restoration of the sense of intimacy and trust. Couples continue to apply the agreed activities and communication techniques at home, and discuss the application process during the sessions. Pace of the work is adapted to each couple, but usually starts with weekly sessions lasting 100 minutes, and gradually tapper, until the desired changes stabilize.

Family therapy

Family therapy brings all family members to work in a constructive way to communicate more effectively, mend wounds, reorganize operational problems that may be hindering members of the family and improve the functioning of families on different levels. Family therapy is effective when the family is exposed to stressful events that affect all members (i.e. the relocation to another country, divorce, serious illness, job loss, death of a loved one), or in the cases of continuous interpersonal conflicts, communication problems and behavioral issues of children and adolescents. Also, the presence of all family members is effective in the treatment of mental health problems that affect the whole family, such as depression, addictions, eating disorders or chronic disorders. It can be homogeneous family (parents and child / children), families who are in the process of divorce (or after divorce), families with children from previous marriages / relationships, and family of origin (adults with their parents and brothers / sisters). The first meetings usually begins with interested party to consider objectives, dynamics and the possibilities of involving family members. The following course of therapy is flexible and adapts to circumstances and possibilities of each family. It may be the main form of work or complementary with an individual approach. The meetings are usually for a period of 100 minutes.
