METHODS

The essence of each psychotherapeutic approach is improvement of mental health and well-being of clients through conversation and development of a trustful relationship. My basic approach to psychotherapy involves the establishment of cooperative relationships that adapts to each client, taking into account his / her / their relevant circumstances, the relationship to self and significant others, and is focused on finding solutions to achieve the changes that the client / clients want. In this approach I am relying primarily on two psychotherapy schools: systemic family therapy and transactional analysis.

Systemic family therapy

Systemic family therapy views the problems of an individual in relation to the different contexts in which this individual lives (i.e. member of the family, partner in a relationship / marriage, person with specific cultural and / or religious allegiances ...), while taking into account wider socio-economic circumstances and political processes. Systemic perspective consider these "contexts" as being of paramount significance for psychological development and emotional well-being of the individual. The importance of understanding different contextual influences comes to the fore especially in work with migrants.

The goal of systemic therapy is to find solutions to clients’ problems through collaborative work and support in creating and achieving the desired changes. The therapeutic process is aimed at discovering conditions that help activate clients’ resources and potentials towards greater autonomy and establishment of better relationships with self and significant others. Central tool is an open dialogue, based on respect for the client as an "expert in his life". Conversation focus on understanding problems from different "angles", encouraging strategies that have proven successful so far and on a quest for new opportunities, resources and activities that lead to the desired changes.

Transactional Analysis

Transactional analysis also includes contextual understanding of problems and cooperative relationship with clients in order to achieve the desired changes, but is especially focused on the analysis of communication patterns (transactions) that participate in the creation and maintenance problems, symptoms and / or disorders. The predominant modes of communication with oneself (internal monologue) and others are formed in early childhood in line with available models of communication, the conditions and circumstances in which a person grew. Throughout life, although the circumstances, opportunities, requirements and types of relationships are changing significantly, there is a tendency to react to new situations in accordance with the "old" communication patterns and "early decisions" (usually without awareness), which often limits new opportunities and quality of relationships.

Transactional analysis approach allows clients to recognize and change limiting "old patterns”, make "new decisions" and develop new communication models that enable capacities for self-actualization, establishment of more harmonious relationships and higher quality of life.
