Psychotherapy and counseling for English speaking internationals in Vienna
Life abroad can be exciting and enriching, but it is certainly full of additional challenges that internationals face. Whether you are an expat, international student or you came to Austria as a family member, there are many obvious and less obvious differences and challenges to cope with, due to the relocation. Cultural differences, language barriers, numerous bureaucratic obstacles, uncertainty about duration of stay (weather is a temporary or permanent stay), physical distance from important others, represent just some of the aspects individuals and families need to deal with in the process of acculturation and integration. In these circumstances, already complex demands for establishment of harmonious social, couple and family relations, become even more multifaceted task.
Additional stress to which internationals are exposed can significantly increase the risk of various intrapersonal and interpersonal problems such as: loneliness, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, addictions, psychosomatic disorders, work-related problems and / or education, as well as numerous partnerships and family problems.
Psychotherapy and counseling are the most efficient ways, not only for a successful and long term dissolution of these problems, but also for the mobilization of personal and family resources in the process of self-actualization, achievement of important goals, and establishment of more harmonious relations. A prerequisite for successful psychotherapy is the establishment of a trustful relationship in which language and culture play crucial roles. For clients is significantly more efficient if psychotherapy is in their native language (or in a second proficient language) with a therapist who understands their culture, as well as, the demands of acculturation and integration into Austrian society.
I am a licensed psychotherapist in Austria with professional and personal experience of migration and the process of acculturation and integration. I originate from Serbia, where I worked as a psychologist and counselor (transactional analyst) in the local community, schools and companies. Since 2008, I live in Vienna where I have earned a PhD in Psychotherapy Sciences at the Sigmund Freud Private University (about international aspects of psychotherapy) and completed another psychotherapy training (systemic family therapy), while working at the University Clinic. I work as a psychotherapist in private practice and as a lecturer and mentor in the International Psychotherapy Program (in English language) at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna.
My approach to psychotherapy involves the establishment of collaborative relationships, adapting to each client, taking into consideration his / her / their relevant circumstances and backgrounds, the relationships with self and significant others, and is focused on finding solutions to achieve the changes that the client / clients want. As a systemic family therapist, I provide psychotherapy services in different formats: Individual, couple and family therapy .
Effective communication skills are of particular importance for successful relations, integration and adjustment to the new the environment. Disputes and conflicts are an integral part of life, and in the encounter with other cultures, mentalities and of course with language barriers, possibilities for disagreements and misunderstandings are significantly higher. With good communication skills, which can be learned, many potential conflicts can be avoided, creatively solved or accepted with more ease. With this aim, I organize and facilitate psychological workshops (seminars) on following topics: assertive communication, conflict management and emotional literacy.
Psychotherapy takes place in a pleasant atmosphere for a confidential conversation. Considering the specificity of migration, which often includes additional costs of living and at the same time increased need for psychotherapy and professional support, the prices are below average for Vienna. Appointments are made fairly quickly. Timing is flexible from Monday to Friday and possible in evening hours as well.
